Apex Appoints Ken Young to Chief Executive Officer

Charlottesville, VA – July 28, 2023 – Apex Clean Energy is pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Young to President and Chief Executive Officer, commencing today. Since 2017, Young served as Apex’s Chief Operating Officer after joining the company in 2015 as Vice President of Operations. Supporting a period of unprecedented and robust growth in the company’s history, Young brings extensive experience in the execution of Apex’s core business and an unrivaled enthusiasm for the company’s mission to accelerate the shift to clean energy.

“I am honored and humbled to step into this new role at Apex and lead our team of world-class, high-integrity professionals who care deeply about what they do, and only more so about how they do it,” said Young. “Since joining Apex, I have witnessed firsthand the strength of our team and our ability to execute on our objectives to drive the expansion of renewable energy across North America. With incredible momentum, a demonstrated business model, and an unmatched portfolio of projects, Apex is poised to successfully deliver on our potential at this pivotal moment for the industry.”

Prior to joining Apex, Young worked for Vestas Wind Systems, where he oversaw technology support throughout the Americas, and he spent several years leading asset management, operations, and other functions at two start-up renewable energy companies. Young is a former U.S. Army infantry officer. He holds a bachelor of science from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a master of business administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Young succeeds Mark Goodwin, who served as President since Apex’s infancy in 2009 and CEO since 2016. Goodwin will remain on Apex’s board of directors, facilitating a seamless transition of responsibilities and supporting the company’s continued progress.

Under Goodwin’s leadership, Apex broadened its focus on wind to include utility-scale solar, storage, distributed energy resources, and green fuel technologies; commercialized approximately 8.4 GW of renewable energy projects; expanded the company’s portfolio of projects to more than 60 GW; led the industry in corporate power purchase transactions; cultivated a dynamic culture while growing the team to more than 400 employees; and, notably, transitioned the company to a pure-play renewable energy independent power producer with the company’s 2021 majority stake acquisition.

“With Ken’s appointment, I have every confidence that Apex will continue to excel, advancing swiftly a strong portfolio of projects, backed by a truly unparalleled team and culture,” said Goodwin. “Ken’s mission-driven leadership and his experience executing on a vision will position the company as a leader in accelerating the energy transition in the years to come. I look forward to continuing to support the entire team and strategy as a board member and am excited for the bright future ahead for Apex.”
