The Apex team and project partners gathered to cut the ribbon for the company’s fifth renewable energy facility in Illinois.

Like any construction project, renewable energy facilities encounter their fair share of unforeseen challenges—barriers that, once overcome, make the finished product all the sweeter. Mulligan Solar, the first project owned and operated solely by Apex, was no exception. After more than four years of diligent development, an exceptionally wet wintry season—imagine more than 20 inches of snow during a single snowstorm and 200% typical rainfall in one day—created significant day-to-day hardships during construction.

Still, these challenges were no match for Apex ingenuity, and in August 2022, the Apex team and project partners gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Mulligan Solar—the company’s fifth renewable energy facility in Illinois. Together, those projects have delivered more than $1 billion in total investment in the state and are generating enough low-cost clean electricity to power over 100,000 homes.

Governor of Illinois J.B. Pritzker joined Apex President and CEO Mark Goodwin for the celebration, remarking: “Solar has become one of the most cost-effective sources of electricity available today, and its ability to generate power at peak times helps reduce electricity costs for all consumers. Apex Clean Energy is a major player in the growth that we are seeing … [and it] shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, with plans for billions more in private capital investment in Illinois alone. Thank you for all that you do to advance clean energy in our state.”
