Apex Receives Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Award
The award salutes Apex’s achievements in bringing cost savings, energy security, and clean power to the largest military installation in the world.
On Tuesday, May 9, the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC) recognized Apex Clean Energy with the Business Case Award for its case study “Providing Energy Security to Fort Hood.” The award, presented at SPLC’s annual summit in Denver, salutes Apex’s achievements in bringing cost savings, energy security, and clean power to the largest military installation in the world.
The hybrid wind and solar facility began officially operating on April 27 and will provide more than 50 percent of the power used by U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. The project will save the Department of Defense—and taxpayers—an estimated $168 million in direct energy costs over nearly three decades.
“This project is very special to us, and we are incredibly proud to help the Army achieve its clean energy goals,” said Melissa Peterson, director of business development at Apex, who accepted the award on Tuesday evening. “We look forward to continuing to work with the Department of Defense to develop cost-effective clean energy solutions for our country’s military.”

The SPLC awards acknowledge leadership in the sustainable purchasing movement, a growing trend in which organizations are using their purchasing power to advance the long-term health and vitality of society, economies, and the planet. Other organizations that submitted case studies for consideration include FedEx, Hilton, HP, Lockheed Martin, and Office Depot.

Founded in 2013, the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council convenes buyers, suppliers, and public interest advocates to develop programs that simplify and standardize sustainable purchasing efforts by large organizations. The Council has quickly attracted, from a wide variety of sectors and regions, more than 180 members with over $200 billion in collective purchasing power.
