Apex Clean Energy Signs Power Purchase Agreement with Evergy

155 MW PPA to Serve Corporate Customers Through Renewables Direct Program

Charlottesville, VA – January 30, 2020 – Apex Clean Energy today announced a power purchase agreement with Evergy, Inc. (NYSE: EVRG) for 155.1 MW of wind power from Apex’s Jayhawk Wind project in Crawford and Bourbon Counties, Kansas. Evergy also announced a goal of reducing carbon output by 80 percent below 2005 levels by 2050. The power will supply commercial and industrial customers through Evergy’s green tariff program, Renewables Direct.

“Jayhawk Wind will deliver significant benefits to Kansas, a state that ranks first in the nation for wind energy as a percentage of total generation,” said Mark Goodwin, Apex Clean Energy president and CEO. “Evergy is an ideal partner to help bring Jayhawk Wind to life. Together, we will help drive the new energy economy in Kansas, generate significant long-term economic benefits for the local communities, and supply leading corporate customers with renewable power.”

The 193 MW Jayhawk Wind will, in part, serve Renewables Direct, an innovative program designed by Evergy to provide large C&I customers with cost-competitive renewable power and a path toward meeting corporate sustainability and clean energy targets.

“Reducing carbon emissions and increasing the amount of wind energy on our system benefits our customers by reducing operating costs and by making our operations more environmentally sustainable,” said Terry Bassham, Evergy president and chief executive officer. “This represents a significant investment in the state of Kansas, helping to create clean energy jobs, and bring additional income for rural communities and school districts. It will also make Kansas more competitive for future economic development and job creation.”

Jayhawk Wind, which is expected to be operational in 2021, will produce enough power to supply 70,000 average U.S. homes. The project will also provide significant economic benefits for the local and state economies—including the creation of more than 115 construction jobs and 7 long-term operations positions—as well as generate over $14 million in landowner payments and $27.2 million in tax revenue.
